Apple officially announced iOS 18.3, bringing significant changes to AI Notification Summaries and the automatic activation of Apple Intelligence.
In the early hours of January 28, 2025, Apple released iOS 18.3 to the general public. This update focuses heavily on AI capabilities, enabling the automatic activation of Apple Intelligence.
Devices that currently support Apple Intelligence include all iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models, followed by iPads and Macs with the Apple Silicon M1 chip or later, including the latest iPad mini, which will have Apple Intelligence enabled by default in this new update.
An interesting feature of iOS 18.3 is Visual Intelligence, which allows you to add events to your Calendar app by scanning a poster or brochure.
Following this is the identification of living things, which makes it easier for the system to distinguish between plants and animals, and the display of notification summaries in italic format, separating them from general notifications.
In addition, in the iOS 18.3 update notes, Apple stated that it has temporarily disabled notification summaries for News and Entertainment apps. After complaints from the BBC, which found that Apple’s AI was misinterpreting headlines, users who opted to enable the feature will be notified when it’s available again.
Meanwhile, macOS 15.3, which also launched today, adds Genmoji and similar improvements to notification summaries.
Users can install iOS 18.3 by going to Settings > General > Software Update.
